Walker Healthforce is seeking a Software Engineer IV (Lead) with 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years directly managing engineers, to lead the design, development, deployment, and support of production AI/ML applications and cloud-based healthcare technology solutions. This role combines hands-on technical expertise in Python, Microsoft Azure, LLMs, AI agents, and RAG pipelines with engineering leadership, Agile delivery, and healthcare security and compliance. This is a Contract-to-Hire opportunity requiring 3 days onsite weekly in Charlotte, NC.

Location: Charlotte, NC – Hybrid (3 days onsite weekly)
Hours/Schedule: 40 hours/week; 8:00 AM–5:00 PM assignment window

Core Requirements:

10+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years directly managing engineers.

Must be available to work onsite 3 days per week in Charlotte, NC.

Healthcare experience involving Epic, HL7, FHIR, patient access, patient experience, or revenue cycle workflows.

Demonstrated hands-on technical depth, including the ability to explain code and architecture personally developed within the past two years.

Production experience delivering AI/ML solutions, including LLM-based applications, agents, RAG pipelines, or NLP systems.

Strong Microsoft Azure experience across compute, data, identity, and monitoring services.
-
Experience operating production workloads on Azure or another cloud platform.

Strong proficiency in Python, with experience in at least one of Java, TypeScript, or Go.

Experience with CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and DevOps practices in regulated environments.
-
Experience building and operating healthcare solutions subject to HIPAA requirements.
-
Experience protecting PHI through encryption, least-privilege access, audit logging, and secrets management.

Experience leading Agile engineering delivery using performance metrics and maintaining accountability for schedules and quality.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions and tradeoffs to nontechnical executives.
We Consider It A Bonus If You Also Have:

Experience with Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Foundry, and LangGraph or similar agent orchestration frameworks.

Experience implementing AI model evaluation practices.

Experience with contact center, IVR, conversational AI, or patient messaging platforms.

Experience with AI governance, model risk, bias testing, and clinical validation.

Experience supporting healthcare AI security and compliance review processes.

Experience managing a combination of full-time engineers, vendors, and offshore teams.
Job Responsibilities:

Lead and manage engineering teams responsible for delivering production AI/ML applications and cloud-based software solutions.
-
Provide hands-on technical leadership across software architecture, development, engineering standards, and solution delivery.

Design, develop, and deploy AI/ML solutions using LLMs, AI agents, RAG pipelines, NLP, and related technologies.
-
Lead development and deployment of scalable solutions using Microsoft Azure cloud services.
-
Support secure production workloads across cloud compute, data, identity, monitoring, and integration environments.
-
Implement and optimize CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, automated testing, and DevOps processes.
-
Ensure healthcare solutions comply with HIPAA, HITECH, PHI protection, privacy, and security requirements.

Implement appropriate security controls, including encryption, access management, audit logging, secrets management, and vulnerability scanning.

Establish monitoring, observability, alerting, and operational practices to maintain production application reliability.

Lead Agile engineering delivery, monitor performance metrics, and maintain accountability for timelines and quality.

Collaborate with healthcare technology, engineering, security, and business stakeholders to define and deliver technical solutions.

Support healthcare integrations and workflows involving Epic, HL7, FHIR, patient access, patient experience, and revenue cycle systems, as applicable.

Communicate architectural decisions, technical tradeoffs, risks, and delivery progress to executive and technical stakeholders.

Coach engineering teams, resolve complex technical challenges, and promote continuous improvement.
